Assessment

Progress Reports

Assessment is ongoing throughout the school year. Teachers use both formative and summative assessment tools to track student progress and inform instruction. Our teachers take a great deal of care evaluating and communicating each student's progress in areas relating to personal growth and core subject matter. The reports give qualitative grades, as well as detailed comments in each of the areas evaluated.

Standardized Achievement Tests

Each fall, students in grades four through six take the Comprehensive Testing Program IV (CTP IV). The battery of tests is designed to collect basic information about student achievement in key areas: listening, reading, vocabulary, writing, mathematics and verbal and qualitative reasoning.

We use the test scores in two ways. When we look at an individual student's scores, we want to know if the test scores reflect the students' day-to-day academic performance. If there is a discrepancy, then we can look at additional information about the student's performance on the achivement tests, as well as the student's areas of strength and challenge in the classroom. We also look at how the school performs on the whole. This information helps us identify areas of strength and challenge in our curriculum.

Our students' scores each year compare positively with those of independent schools nationally.
