TCS Traditions

Below are several traditions at TCS, which exemplify the core values of the School.

Diversity Festival

Every other year TCS hosts a Diversity Festival in the fall. Through the hard work of teachers and parent volunteers, we bring a variety of performers from world cultures to the school, hold activity and craft workshops and provide students with an exotic fruit break that gives them a taste of fruits and vegetables from around the world. The morning events culminate in a lunch of international cuisines.

Halloween and UNICEF

Halloween is a fun time at TCS. Each year the Parents' Association holds an elaborate carnival, complete with games and prizes. On Halloween, students and teachers all dress up for our annual parade around the block. We support UNICEF through collecting money during the Pumpkin Walk at the carnival, with donations collected as part of the parade and from children collecting for UNICEF when they trick-or-treat.

Greenfest

In the spring of 2009, TCS began a spring tradition of hosting a Greenfest, a day of celebration and focus on how we and local community organizations can be part of the "greening of Atlanta." Family, friends and neighbors join us for a morning of fun activities and learning experiences. We use both local and TCS community resources to celebrate and inform us about environmental issues and sustainable lifestyles.

Project Fair

Every other year, students are encouraged to explore and investigate art, science, history or literature. Students create projects according to guidelines, then bring their projects to school for a celebration of their expertise in the area they learned about. The projects are displayed in the gym. The Project Fair celebration begins with an evening when families and friends view the displays and listen to students tell about their projects. The following day all of the classes in the school view the Project Fair displays. The Project Fair is a great way for students to learn about topics that might fall outside of the general school curriculum.

Buddy Program

In one of our favorite social programs at TCS, students in the upper grades pair up with students in the preschool and lower grades for the year. Each week the buddies get together to play, read, have snacks and forge friendships. Strong bonds develop, communication skills are strengthened and in some cases, lifelong friendships form.

Olympic Day

Each year in May, TCS hosts Olympic Day, a celebration of individual physical fitness and good-natured competition. This fun event includes a mile race through the Piedmont Park for students in second through sixth grades, as well as many other group games and challenges for all students. The event is kicked off by a prominent motivational speaker and rally in the gym.

Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day

This fall TCS will celebrate Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day with an all-school celebration of music. Working with our music teachers, each grade prepares a musical selection for a morning performance. The songs are chosen to celebrate grandparents and other special family friends.
