The Atlanta City Council voted unanimously today to approve The Children’s School’s application for a new Special Use Permit that will allow the school, over a number of years, to build out its new master plan, ultimately resulting in more playspace, improved classroom facilities, a performing arts center, and additional off-street parking for the staff.

The approval by the City Council was the culmination of a process that began in March 2007 and included input from the Midtown Neighbors’ Association (MNA), the school’s neighbors, and Atlanta City Councilperson Anne Fauver. As part of this process, The Children’s School also has entered into a separate agreement with the MNA to attempt to reduce the impact of its afternoon carpool queue on its neighbors.

“Throughout this entire process, we have been fortunate to work with individuals, including Councilperson Fauver, MNA president Elston Collins, and MNA land use committee chair Steve Brodie, who have been dedicated to arriving at a solution that benefits all parties,” says Marcia Prewitt Spiller, Head of The Children’s School. “I am delighted that the plan we all worked so hard on has been approved by the City Council and now look forward to working productively with the neighborhood as we build out the components of that plan.”
